Puppets,
from sketches to animation: Courtroom
2 - the People

It
was already pretty obvious by the time
I got to shoot the Courtroom and the
People in it, that I'll have to be satisfied
if only some of the puppets got to be
designed and executed as I really wanted
them. For the most part, the others
were to be scavanged from various leftover
pieces from Soldat's old puppets. It'd
be insane to build so many new, yet
unimportant characters. The whole idea
was to use that old puppets. But, the
thing was, there wren't enough of them
as it was! So, I had to come up with
some more parts. That gave me a chance
to squeeze-in some more angles while
shaping them. I made 13 headless bodies,
together with another 8 lower parts
(legs). I modelled them in clay, that
hardened stiff when dried. |

l
remember counting 43 different puppets
at one time on this set. But' that applies
only to similar camera angles as here
below; in the Courtroom there were at
some point as much as 14 members of
the Jury, and at another time, at least
7 - 8 puppets in the Audience on the
balcony. I was forced to combine them
all the time. At a point, even the Judge
and the Prosecutor and his helper, and
defence attorneys as well, ended up
among the Audience. I've been tight
with puppets. There's nothing even close
to the copy-paste button in the reality.
Even casting from moulds takes time
and preparation. |

So... I wanted important court,
important building, important courtroom,
a big fuss. It's Santa Claus, and
he is here to serve as an examplary
copyright enfringer... so I shot
the balcony. But, as much as I felt
it'd give an added impression of
grandiousness to the courtroom,
there wasn't any guarantee for this
shot to end up in the final cut,
so I didn't bother too much with
the audience. But,
even may they be blurry and in the
far background, I needed some faces
to fill in the first floor. Obviously,
it's again the same bunch of puppets,
just slightly re-aranged, with some
details changed.
