Over
the North Pole

1)
the North pole - I had only the Santa's
lair previously prepared for that
set. That's basically a barge with
the superstructure in a shape of a
cottage. But the terrain was too big
to store or transport, so I had to
left constructing it for the actual
shooting. I did, however, a scale
test model of it, so when I started
constructing it, it was pretty straightforward.
The difficilt part was buliding the
stand for the camera with the stop-mo
machine.

2)
the Globe - I had the ball, an used
streetlamp plastic bulb. But I had
to find the balance center, then fix
it to an improvised rotation device
I can control. So then there's left
- for me to apply - the reliefs to
the land masses, and to paint the
thing. I've attached also the clouds
for an additional pass.

3)
the Moon
Now, one can hardly call this a "set",
but it nevertheless is an exterior
shot. To do it, I've used the painted
sky background that I've already used
for a number of shots, and added the
moon between Santa's sled and the
sky. It wouldn't even be worth of
mentioning if there's not the angle
I placed it upon. I've learned on
previos sets, that the only way to
light the set satisfactory in this
conditions was with indirect lighting,
by reflecting the light from the ceiling.
There's been no way to light the "Moon"
from the front, so the only logical
solution was having the "Moon"
placed at 45 degrees angle to the
ceiling, thus receiving the reflected
light better than the sky background.
Having the ball "Moon" would
be pointless in every aspect, but
flat one, if circle-shaped, would
be immediately recognised if rotated
by any two-digit degree. The solution
was this: I had to compensate, so
I had to print-out the "Moon"
map elongated vertically. It worked,
because camera was fixed so that Moon
model appeared as perfect circle.
